iphone remote app sees itunes but won’t connect

i had a problem with the iphone remote app where it would see itunes and appear to bind just fine, but then wouldn’t connect to the library. the culprit seems to be a fake network interface i’d set up in order to access the mac’s web server from a windows vm.

why does this cause interference? no idea. but if i disable it, remote works again.
